Symptoms
The symptoms of chest pain can vary widely depending on the cause. Heart-related chest pain may feel like :
  • Pressure, tightness, squeezing, or aching
  • Pain that radiates to the shoulder, arm, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Sweating
  • Lightheadedness
  • Rapid heartbeat

Other types of chest pain may be less likely to be heart-related if they include :
  • A sour taste or sensation of food re-entering the mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Tenderness when pressing on the chest

Causes
Chest pain can stem from various sources, including heart problems, lung conditions, digestive issues, muscle or bone problems, and other causes. Some of the most common causes include :
  • Heart-related: Angina, heart attack, aortic dissection, pericarditis
  • Lung-related: Pulmonary embolism, pleurisy, collapsed lung, pulmonary hypertension
  • Digestive: GERD, swallowing disorders, gallbladder or pancreas issues
  • Musculoskeletal: Costochondritis, injured ribs, muscle soreness
  • Other: Panic attack, shingles, nerve pain
